Post University EDU 624 - eLearning Design for Diverse Learners

Please feel free to visit: Mr. Bartles' EDU 624 Blog!!

This project highlights an e-Learning unit designed to address the diverse needs of middle school science students.  After completing a thorough needs analysis, it was determined that Connecticut State Science Framework 8.4, which related to bridge design, would be a good unit to develop an e-Learning module for.

Project Introduction
Lesson Content is outlined below
Guiding Material - both for instructor and for student
Lesson Storyboards (PowerPoint file) - this should be viewed in NOTES format!!
e-Learning Evaluation
There is more interesting information available below the lesson content.  Scroll down to read about the history of the middle school and more about e-Learning!  References can also be found by scrolling down.

Modified Lesson

Student Handout

1. Pretest - the lesson starts out with a pretest to determine what students already know about bridges.  Regardless on the score achieved, the student will proceed to the vocabulary portion of the lesson.

2. Vocabulary - this is the section of the lesson covering the vocabulary.  This is only separate because when combined, the file was too large to upload to this website.  Students will be filling in the information in their packets, and should pause if necessary.

3. Bridge Lesson Content - this is the presentation of the content associated with this lesson.  The content is slightly modified to make the objectives of the lesson achievable for the students in this path.

4. Vocab Quiz - The knowledge of the vocabulary is crucial for the overall understanding of the lesson.  Therefore, it is important to ensure that students understand the vocabulary after they have been exposed to it in the content animations.  Students who still struggle will be given the opportunity to practice using flashcards before trying this activity again.

5. Flashcards - This activity will only be for those who did not receive a score of 70% on the Vocabulary Quiz activity above.  Students will practice the definitions and vocabulary words.

6. Which Bridge Activity- This activity will be a fun, interactive activity in which students click on areas of pictures to identify types of bridges as well as parts of specific bridges.

7. Bridge Test - Several of the objectives of this eLearning module are content based, and the students will be responsible for this content on the CMT test in March.  To hold the students responsible, and to ensure that the content-based objectives are met, the students will be given a quick test.

8. The Cargo Bridge Game - Students will finish up the lesson by playing the Cargo Bridge game and uploading screenshots of completed levels.  This will allow the students to demonstrate what they learned about bridges and bridge design through the e-Learning event.

Grade-level Lesson

Student Handout

1. Pretest - the lesson starts out with a pretest to determine what students already know about bridges.  Based on the results of the pretest, students will be placed into the advanced path (16 out of 20 or higher on the pretest) or the grade-level path (below 16 out of 20 on the pretest).

2. Bridge Lesson Content (includes vocabulary) - This will have two parts.  First, a vocabulary lesson will expose the students to new words, definitions and picture examples.  The second part will teach the students about the different types of bridges (beam, truss and suspension), the parts of each bridge, the forces on each bridge, the pros and cons of each bridge, when each bridge is used and real-world examples of each bridge type.

4. Flashcards - This activity will only be for those who did not receive a score of 70% on the Vocabulary Quiz activity above.  Students will practice the definitions and vocabulary words.

5. Which Bridge Activity- This activity will be a fun, interactive activity in which students click on areas of pictures to identify types of bridges as well as parts of specific bridges

6. Bridge Test - Several of the objectives of this eLearning module are content based, and the students will be responsible for this content on the CMT test in March.  To hold the students responsible, and to ensure that the content-based objectives are met, the students will be given a quick test.  Based on the results of the test, students will be sent to one of two possible bridge simulations.

7. The Free World Game (FWG) Bridge Game - Students will finish up the lesson by playing the FWG Bridge Game and uploading a screenshot of the completed level.  This will allow the students to demonstrate what they learned about bridges and bridge design through the e-Learning event.  This will be for students who did not score above 70% on the bridge test.

8. Bridge-It Simulator - Students will finish up the lesson by using the Bridge-It software on the computer to design a digital bridge.  This will allow the students to demonstrate what they learned about bridges and bridge design through the e-Learning event.  This will be for students who scored above 70% on the bridge test.

Advanced-level Lesson

Student Handout

1. Pretest - the lesson starts out with a pretest to determine what students already know about bridges.  Based on the results of the pretest, students will be placed into the advanced path (16 out of 20 or higher on the pretest) or the grade-level path (below 16 out of 20 on the pretest).
